Wisdom is Spot On

book of wisdom 1

***********************************************************

 “The Book of Wisdom was written about a hundred years before Christ, by an unknown pious Jew writing to strengthen his readers in their afflictions.  The first eight chapters are an exhortation to rulers to be just and wise.  The ninth chapter is a beautiful prayer for wisdom.  The tenth to the nineteenth chapters demonstrate from the history of the Jewish people the advantages of wisdom. ”  [Douay Rheims, Holy Trinity Edition].

It is speculated that the writer has in view the time of either Ptolemy IV Philopator (221-204 B.C.), or Ptolemy VII Physicon (145-117 B.C.), for it is only under these depraved princes that the Egyptian_Jews had to endure persecution. The Book of Wisdom is one of seven books omitted in the Protestant bible.

Wisdom 1:1-5

“Love virtue, you who are judges on earth,
let honesty prompt your thinking about the Lord,
seek Him in simplicity of heart;
since He is to be found by those who do not put Him to the test,
He shows Himself to those who do not distrust Him.
But selfish intentions divorce from God;
and Omnipotence, put to the test, confounds the foolish.”

 Although the writer was edifying fellows who were experiencing suffering and oppression from the hands of corrupt rulers, these words could very well describe our world:

idolatry

Chapter 14, the Origin and Evils of Idolatry [NAB]

22-27: “Then it was not enough for them to err in their knowledge of God; but even though they live in a great war of ignorance, they call such evils peace.  For while they celebrate their child-slaying sacrifices or clandestine mysteries, or frenzied carousals in unheard-of rites, They no longer safeguard either lives or pure wedlock; but each either waylays and kills his neighbor, or aggrieves him by adultery. And all is confusion-blood and murder, theft and guile, corruption, faithlessness, turmoil, perjury, Disturbance of good men, neglect of gratitude, besmirching of souls, unnatural lust , disorder in marriage, adultery and shamelessness.  For the worship of infamous idols is the reason and source and extremity of all evil.”

Chapter 15:1  “But You,our God!  are good and true, slow to anger, and governing all with mercy..”

God be the glory

In Proverbs: 9:10, another book of wisdom that Catholics and Protestants share: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is prudence.”  [Douay Rheims]

  1. I didn’t know this work existed.

    It seems the church is always made stronger by affliction. I know this is true in the lives of each believer..

    Great layout and pictures. And you’ve got the link thingy figured out (I’ve been to newadvent.org before).

    Thanks for sharing, Kassie.

    God’s blessings…

  2. Hi Chris and thanks. yes, some of the 7 “deuterocanicals” may appear in my posts every now and again….feel free to “jump over them” if you wish.

    For what it is worth, the books of Wisdom, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Sirach, Tobit and Esther (some fragments were not included), were refused mainly because they were written in Greek, while the other OT books were in Hebrew.
    The story of Mattathias in 1 Maccabees is downright exhilarating, about the Jewish priest with his 5 sons, who fought against Antiochus Epiphanes, the wicked ruler who profaned the holy of holies and terrorized Israel about the year 146 BC.

    Anyway, you probably know much of this info, but this very short post may fill in some more blanks about these books. Take what you like Chris, and you will not offend me at all if you leave some or all of it! http://www.ewtn.com/library/ANSWERS/PCBIB.HTM

    blessings and wisdom! Kassey
